So I've bought an Epson AcuLaser C1100, and here is how I got it to work on my Debian unstable.

Update (4.2.2007): the driver also works on my new Debian testing AMD64. I automaticly uses the 32 bit libraries because Epsons binary is definityle 32 bit.

Description

The Epson AcuLaser C1100(de) is a cheap 600dpi color laser printer with very good quality, even for photos. It has only one drum unit, this means that it will need four passes to print a page (one pass for each toner) but it's fast enought for my needs (and still faster as an inkjet). Max page size is A4, you can print over USB or parallel port. Ethernet port is an option (the printer with ethernet is sold under the name AcuLaser C1100N), but it would have meant payin 50% more, so I sticked to a local printer. I paid 300€ for this printer.

Debian/GNU Linux intallation

There is no known free software driver for it, but Epson provides printer drivers for GNU/Linux.

Note that this is a binary driver, there are no sources in the .tgz. I'm also unsure of the licence, as you will find both GPL and Epson Kowa Public Licence files in the tarball. I think that the non-free Kowa licence applies.

Problems

Version 1.2

The margin problems have been corrected in Version 1.2. Be carefull that your CUPS ppd file is updated after the upgrade. If you still experiment margin problems, create a new printer with an other name, it should work!

Version 1.0

There is a margin problem: the right margin is bigger than the left one.
